Pavones, Costa Rica, Southern Pacific Region (Golfo Dulce/Puntarenas)

Pavones refers to an are of coastline between Puerto Pilon and Punta Banco on the Burrica Peninsula that forms the border between Costa Rica and Panama.

Rio Claro de Pavones, Costa Rica is small fishing town centered around one of the longest left point breaks in the world, formed by the Rio Claro.  The “Rio Claro” break connects to “The corner” break, producing kilometer long peeling waves on good south swells.

The wave works best on large S and SSW swells with periods over 16 seconds in order to refract around Punta Banco and make it around the corner.  The wave is a super lined up wall that peels incredibly fast.

Pavones is a popular surfing destination in Costa Rica and only gets busy in the summer months when international surf travelers come to challenge themselves to race the wave from start to finish.
